Portuguese Course Levels A1–C2 Explained

What the level labels describe

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) uses six levels, from A1 to C2, to describe language proficiency. The levels help learners and teachers discuss what someone can do with a language. They are not a fixed timetable or a promise of a particular result after a set number of lessons.

Speaking, listening, reading and writing may develop at different speeds. Tell admissions which tasks you find comfortable and which you want to improve. A placement discussion should consider more than the name of a course you previously attended.

A1–A2: basic communication

These levels cover basic use of the language, from familiar expressions and simple introductions towards routine exchanges about everyday needs. A beginner may focus on understanding simple questions, giving personal information and handling common situations with support.

LICA’s Everyday Life pathway is listed at A1–A2. Ask about the starting level of the next group and what it covers, especially if you have studied some Portuguese already.

B1–B2: more independent communication

These levels move towards more independent use, including discussing familiar topics, explaining experiences and expressing opinions with increasing detail. The right class depends on how confidently you can follow and take part in conversations as well as your reading and writing.

LICA’s intensive pathway is listed at B1–B2. The course pace and entry requirements should be discussed with admissions. A grouped label does not mean every class teaches the entire range at once.

C1–C2: proficient use and focused support

At the proficient levels, learners work with demanding material and express themselves with greater flexibility and precision. Academic writing, presentations and careful use of language may become particular priorities.

LICA lists an Academic Support pathway at C1–C2. Confirm the current delivery mode with admissions. Ask which support is appropriate to your current skills and goals; the programme name alone does not establish an entry requirement or certify your level. Before enrolling, confirm how placement and progress are assessed and which completion document is issued.
