Start with the conversations you need

Think about where Portuguese would help you this week: introducing yourself to a neighbour, asking a question at work, shopping or understanding an appointment. Write down a few situations and share them when asking about a course. A clear goal makes it easier to compare lessons and practise between classes.

For a beginner, useful practice includes both listening and speaking. Rehearse a short exchange, listen for familiar words and ask your teacher for feedback. Progress involves using what you learn outside the lesson as well as completing classroom activities.

Choose your starting level

If you have never studied Portuguese, ask about beginner options. If you already understand some Portuguese, describe what you can do comfortably and where you get stuck. A level discussion or placement assessment can help avoid joining a class that moves too quickly or repeats material you already know.

Plan a routine you can maintain

Consider your work hours, travel time and time for independent practice. Check whether the course is in person, hybrid or online, and ask how often classes meet. Confirm the current timetable and next start date before making arrangements.

Ask these questions before enrolling

Ask about the starting level, course length, guided hours, total fee, included materials and any additional charges. If the fee is listed as on request, get the current amount from admissions before applying.
